FedEx truck kills Madison cyclist

https://www.channel3000.com/news/4592682/detail.html

There's a *seemingly* better article that contains this blurb:
"A 33-year-old Madison woman was killed Thursday on the east side when her bicycle crashed into a FedEx truck. Police said Theresa A. Kacynski was heading east on the left-hand sidewalk along..."
here, but the link is not working right now:

Switch to map to see the streets, but Marquette and Milwaukee are dead center.

Isn't that a little biased? Or is that just me?

"east side when her bicycle crashed into a FedEx truck."

Article says she was riding on the sidewalk, so I assume she was off the sidewalk and crossing the road at the time. Maybe not quite the classic right hook.

Some more details from:
https://www.madison.com/archives/read...0:418748:METRO

A 33-year-old Madison woman was killed Thursday on the east side when her bicycle crashed into a FedEx truck.

Police said Theresa A. Kacynski was heading east on the north sidewalk along Milwaukee Street about 2 p.m. when she collided with the van, which was southbound and making a right turn from Marquette Street onto Milwaukee Street.

Kacynski died at the scene.

Police spokesman Mike Hanson said he didn't know if Kacynski was wearing a helmet.

"It was a horrific scene," he said.

He said the FedEx driver had a stop sign. Kacynski did not.

Police today were not identifying the driver, who was not hurt.

Investigator were still determining if any charges or citations would be made.

They seem to neglect to place those on sidewalks........

It sounds like he stopped, checked for approaching traffic in the road, looked at the corner for pedestrian traffic on the sidewalk, and started to make his turn. That's when she hit him on the right side. She probably went head first into the side of his truck.
I've had sidewalk cyclists come out of nowhere before after I'd checked all around. That's why riding on the sidewalk is so dangerous.

I have ridden on the sidewalk as an adult about a handful of times...only for very short periods. Most of the time I just walk my bike on the sidewalk. Most of our sidewalks suck anyway. I don't know how you get anywhere very quickly while riding on them. I think she had a false sense of "security" while riding on the sidewalk. You would have thought she could have seen such a large vehicle? Perhaps she thought that large vehicle would "stop" for her since she is on the "sidewalk". Fat chance! Sadly there are many more blind spots and danger zones. I wish they would put a blurb in the article about how much more dangerous "sidewalk" riding is to riding on the road correctly (w/ traffic on the right). I think the company "fedex" could pay for a few safety commercials.

Keep Cycling on the road!

How about: "Statistically, you are 25 times more likely to be killed riding on the sidewalk. So if you insist on riding on the sidewalk, it's a good idea to ride very, very carefully; consider stopping at every driveway, parking lot, and cross-street to walk your bike across."

Any better? It speaks to the two main facts about sidewalks: they're statistically 25 times more likely to get you killed, and they're intended mainly for walking, but still makes allowances for stubborn people who prefer to risk their lives!

"Statistics" don't mean squat. If you knew anything about statistics you wouldn't mis-use them that way.

Don't run red lights, wear a helmet, use hand signals, get some cycle lights(front and rear) and, FFS, don't run red lights!

One might say the same for a dictionary

Riding dangerously on the sidewalk is dangerous. Riding not dangerously on the sidewalk is not dangerous.
Yeah, I play Russian Roulette "not dangerously." So, obviously, it's not dangerous...well except to those *few* who just happen to die from it.....

Since there is only a 1 in 6 (17%) chance of getting killed during my turn, it's practically harmless!!

I have been bicycling for years and in my experience bicycling on the sidewalks is much more dangerous than bicycling on the roads. And in some states it is against the law.

I would add "Ride no faster than 8 MPH and never cross a street, alley, parking lot entrance until you've verified that it's clear". (Driveways are probably okay, unless they are completely blind.) Under those conditions, I think sidewalk riding might be sufficiently safe. But who wants to ride under those conditions? I'll bet this person wasn't.
