Such researchers might find that many BF regulars think that they are not only "better people" than drivers but that some think they are "better" than all those unworthy people on bikes that are not as "serious" as they are about their bicycling prowess.

I used to write polls, and it was an enlightening study. The usual object of a poll is not to measure public opinion, but to fabricate public opinion. A poll can be worded in a way to make a majority of people support whatever your client wants a majority to support. Unfortunately, scientific papers and studies are little different than polls in this regard. The majority of papers and studies over the last few decades are nonsense with findings which cannot be replicated. Unfortunately, some of these studies were instrumental in formulating public policy, and even after the fundamental science is proven wrong, we are usually stuck with the policies it gave birth to.
How do you define what is a “cyclist”? Is in anyone who rides a bicycle? Your typical, lycra-wearing cyclist who works as an account executive is going to have a much different response than someone who rides a bicycle to their job waiting on tables at a restaurant or stocking shelves at a grocery store. And, how do you define what is a “better person?” Few people were stronger “political participators” or “social participants” than the nazis, Maoists, and Stalinists of the 20th century. I’m sure they regarded themselves as “better people,” even as they committed inhuman atrocities against other human beings.
