@ whoever: No, your lycra and expensive bike don't make you more of a "cyclist" than anyone else, in the same way a fire suit and Ferrari don't make you more of a "motorist" than any other drivers. Enthusiast? Maybe. "Cyclist"? No.

What about the deadbeat dad who drives a car. Is he not a motorist? Who's to tell?

So, answer me this. You see a cyclist... er... scratch that... a person who happens to be riding a bicycle... off in the distance. How exactly do you ascertain his lifestyle from just seeing this person? I'm confused... Hence all the ellipses...

So complicated...

Odd. Who's talking about race?

Let's take a poll here. Who here who doesn't consider Mr. King a cyclist is middle class and white? Calling a spade a spade is different than having a hang-up about race.

Somebody who ends up on a bike due to a court order which removes them from their car may not be an intentional cyclist, but they're still a cyclist. If/when they get their license or car back, the cycling habit probably won't stick.
It's like someone forced into rehab by court order. They might dry out for a few months, but it's pretty likely that they'll end up falling back into their old habits again.

A cyclist is anyone who is riding a bicycle.

However when not riding a bicycle, some folks are still considered or called or self-referred to as cyclists. This later 'label' can be debated, the former definition can not.

Um... should a guy who lost his license to operate a motor vehicle on roads actually be riding a bicycle on roads? I don't know what his medical issue is, but if he's not safe operating one kind of vehicle on public roads, how does he justify operating another vehicle on public roads?

Do we know where Cheney was when Rodney was shot?

"Justify" riding a bike on public roads? To whom? The BF Real Cyclist Court of Appeals?

Of course there are exceptions but don't appear to be many.
hmm I'll have to disagree for the block Pat. Waaay too much racial and econ assumption for my Canadian blood. My rides are filled with ppls from all cultures/backgrounds and economic statuses. America might be lilly white still but, that simply isn't an accurate reflection of the world around you. This includes the world's ppls on this board as well, many I know here don't fit the description above AT ALL.

A cyclist, to me, is anyone that generally uses their bike for transportation/recreation/ or health reasons. This would incl. anyone who needs to ride all the time for DUIs become unwilling cyclists, but cyclists none-the-less. They still get driven up on from behind, and the driver has no way of knowing what level of rider they are approaching, so it really matters not. If one rides a bike then in that moment one is a cyclist. Same as someone sitting drunk behind the wheel, mentally debating driving home with the keys in the ignition, by law is a drunk driver.

No disagreement from me. My point is about those self appointed spokesmen on BF who use the phrases "We Cyclists," "Real Cyclists," "Serious Cyclists," etc. to disparage those who don't fit their own profile, all the while assuming that "We Cyclists," "Real Cyclists," "Serious Cyclists," etc. fit the same profile as themselves.

Now THAT"S funny !!!!!

Reports today speculate that it was part of a domestic dispute. He probably did not get injured this time after throwing a fully grown woman six feet, or maybe he did, just not a female CHP officer.

I disagree. A cyclist is someone who rides bicycles, not someone riding a bicycle. The guy who steals bikes to buy drugs is not a cyclist. He's a thief on a stolen bike.

Why is there so much anxiety that unsavoury characters might be called cyclists? I certainly don't feel any guilt by association.

What anxiety? It's like my friend that paints movie sets, and my ex, that paints portraits. Sure, they're both painters...
