By the way the photo on my world touring cycling page, https://www.cyclingscholar.com, has a photo from rt 23 in Otis. You should know this route like the back of your hand.

Not only do I know Rte. 23 real well but Bow Pass in Canada and Switzerland (though I did my Swiss riding around Lake Geneva)-great shots.
I'm only out in Western MA another couple of weeks before I'm back in Boston but I'll have to shoot down 23 to General Knox Rd. on one of my rides and try to spot you.
In the meantime enjoy those Berkshire views and ain't it nice that we don't have to go half way around the world for them.

You bum! Why did you post that link? I'm going to miss my bike ride because I ended up reading for 1/2 an hour! Excellent site.

Thanks. I always thought a cycling site should have lots of photos and brief commentary, not endless trip journals and whining about traffic.

Genec,
Of course in calling San Diego `fantasyland` I was being sarcastic. It was in response to Buzz implying that I was telling tall tales and that nowhere were drivers as bike friendly as those I was using as examples. Hope that clears things up.
There have been a few people saying that as I drive to work, I have no way of understanding the full dangers of morning traffic. Fair enough. I don`t think, though, that the only people complaining about unsafe drivers are commuters. Just my 2 cents.

I think at commute times the frustration of motorists is at it's highest and we cyclists just become an easy target. Which is sad actually, as cyclists are really "one less car," and in reality we lighten the commute load for motorists. We should be applauded.
Just to let you know, I have commuted from City Heights/North Park to the Navy base, from North Park through El Cajon/Santee to SDSU (long route chosen for exercise). From North Park to Kearny Mesa, From Downtown to Kearny Mesa. From Lemon Grove to El Cajon. From Lemon Grove to Point Loma. From Lemon Grove to Kearny Mesa. From Lemon Grove to Sorrento Valley. From Clairemont to Sorrento Valley, and from Clairemont to Del Mar. My commutes have varied from 12 miles to 40 miles.
So you can see I have commuted to and from a variety of areas.
Pleasure rides have been to places like Tecate, Dulzura (the cafe), Skyline Truck Trail, Alpine, Carlsbad, Coronado... and the long tours which have taken me from San Fran to San Diego, and down the length of Baja, just to name a few.
I wish I could put my finger on exactly what seems to bug some motorists. I have confronted some over the years and I have never been given a good answer for their honks or yelling, etc... it always boils down to "we own the road and you don't belong" in some form or variation.
Since I know I do belong on the road... I know those motorists are wrong. That is the best I can do.
At any rate... keep spinning and enjoy what you can.
Oh and that fantasyland thing... really I did find it. It was just amazing... Oulu Finland. Now if only it didn't snow there.

While those people may not be commuters, that is the time I have had most of my problems... although I do mention those Sunday hassles...

Yes, commuters are doing a good thing in lightening the load for drivers. How`s that for irony? Well done. By the way, I love your SDSU commute...from North Park via Santee/El Cajon! Yes, I`d call that detour going just a bit out of the way. Cheers.

Back then Rancho San Diego didn't exist and that whole area off of 94 toward 54 was all like old 94 used to be. Know where the old steel bridge is on 94? That was the main road back then.
Speaking of co-operation from motorists... I actually had folks buy me beer at the Dulzura Cafe after seeing me out on the road. And of course the other thrill was racing motorists down the mountain from the Cafe... they just would not go as fast as I was willing to take those curves... on my skinny tire bike. (I think I thought I was "bullet proof" back then)
Sadly the thing I see more and more these days is distracted motorists... folks on cell phones just not paying attention. I've had close calls at green lights due to red light running drivers.
Funniest thing that happened (in an ironic way) was watching a guy try to make a left turn (across my path) while juggling a cigarette, a cell phone and a cup of coffee. I couldn't help but laugh out loud as I moved out of his way and continued on my way. Classic case of idiot behind the wheel.
Anyway... take it easy, but ride hard.

Every day I see hundreds of cars pass me on US Route 20 and other similar routes, often moving well into the lane of oncoming traffic when it is NOT NECESSARY TO DO SO. (meaning the shoulder already gives me more than enough room). Seems to me the vast majority if drivers are doing more than enough.
