This morning as I was heading to the Beaverton Transit Center, I observed a City truck parked up on the curb, blocking the bike lane. I suspect that it was the city's landscaping supervisor coming out to inspect the trees that line SW Lombard.

One of the side effects of this was lots of gravel ended up being pushed out of the planting spaces and into the sidewalk and bike lane.

Tonight when I came home, I found myself dodging these rocks. So, I picked up a bucket and a dustpan, and managed to clear the rocks out of the bike lane.


They weren't as heavy as you'd think... (They were HEAVIER)

I didn't just toss them, I found a better use for them in some minor trail maintenance.

....kicking off this summers' fix a flat and basic bike ownership classes at the shop today ( program I helped establish), i'll be empowering a dozen people or so this afternoon how to fix a flat.

...and this weekend, League Cycling Instructor training.

Trimmed some more branches and swept a broken vodka bottle.

Oh, and I started to clean up the mess in the new park in Glen Cove. Lots of litter has floated up on the shore of the pond, and I was raking it unto dry land. Not exactly a bike path related issue? It is, the park has a bike path, and although the litter was not on the path, it is a terrible eyesore. I called Glen Cove Beautification Dept. and their message said a cleanup is planned for this coming Saturday the 14th, so I'll be back then. We need at least 50 black garbage bags.

Called the transportation department of a local school district to report a bus driver who deliberately buzzed me in the lane when he could have changed lanes to pass safely.

145 fifth-graders, in shifts, each got half an hour of bike education and traffic safety. That evening, I taught what's probably the first "Motorist Education" workshop that's been done here in Arkansas to half a dozen folks. Spent Saturday teaching Traffic Skills and bike care to 15 Boy Scouts for their Cycling merit badge requirements. A little hoarse today ;-)

I now have over 10 hours of local bike lane sweeping under my belt, and I have barely even touched the tip of the iceberg.

What I thought would be all done by the end of the summer, is now looking to be far in excess of that time frame.

Rode with our Mayor on Friday, as part of ride to work day. I know him and have run into Mayor Mc Ginn around town on his bike, he is a real bike commuter.

Rode with him at the head of the pack, and talked with him for about 10 minutes of the half hour ride to city hall about biking and stuff. offered some talking points about bicycling and planning for bike traffic he seemed pretty excited about.

I got two vehicles ticketed for parking in the bike lane, both of them on either side of the "No Parking in Bike Lane" signs. I was heading to the store and saw them parked. When I got to the corner there was conveniently a police officer sitting in the parking lot so I told him about the vehicles and he went right over and wrote both of them up.

200 word letter to the editor supporting bicycling got put up at the letters to the editor at the Seattle Times; drafted a 600 word op-ed piece for possible submission by two of the states' large bicycling advocacy organizations.

my 200 words reprinted below...

"Danny Westneat forgot to mention the civic virtue and economic value of bicycling in his recent column on bicycle backlash [“Getting a handle on ‘bikelash,’” NWSunday, May 22].

Bicycling and walking in public is an exercise of our American right to travel. Those of you interested in our collective American liberties or our cities saving money do not ignore the right to travel public roads in this country by bicycle.

Planning for bikes makes economic sense, public-safety sense and is common sense for drivers miffed at bike traffic as well. Planning for bike traffic saves cities money.

Planning for bike traffic makes it easier for motorists to drive around bikes and encourages more bicyclists to obey the law.

Road rechannelizations increase public safety in Seattle. Pedestrians, motorists and bicyclists are safer along roads that have been rechannelized, and traffic usually flows smoother.

Who doesn’t want smoother traffic, safer driving and safer conditions in neighborhoods for residents?

People who are antipathetic toward bicycling have lost sight of the fact that the widely held values of limited government, lowered civic costs, safer cities and more affordable personal transportation goes hand in hand with promoting bicycling.

Whether you’re a liberal, libertarian, conservative or a tea partyer, your values support promoting and respecting bicycling on the roads."

Reported another school bus driver who passed at an unsafe distance to "teach me a lesson," this in spite of the recent installation of "sharrows" on the boulevard where it happened. She pinched me between the side of the bus and parked cars. I could have reached out and touched the bus as it passed. Supervisor said she would be counseled when she returned to the bus yard.

Check out the length of that thorn I'm showing to the reporter. What (insert John Malkovich yelling MORON! from "Burn After Reading" here) would think it would be a good idea to plant trees with 3 inch long thorns in planter boxes along a sidewalk?

Old locks attached to bike racks at Beaverton Transit Center (without bikes) are about to be removed by TriMet... (I suspect other MAX stations are getting similar treatments)

Went out on SW Lombard, and found a lot of rocks in the bike lane (again). So, I took a bucket and dustpan, and cleaned it up for us.

These unsafe lamp posts were reported to ODOT prior to the Worst Day of The Year Ride (February). They did nothing.



I've glued reflectors to them, some were later broken off, and are now missing.

Now, I'm using marking paint, reflective beads, and retro-reflective tape to mark the hazard.

I hacked away at some vegetation today, about two hours ago. I took before and after pictures. You can't see very far in the before photo (above).
Now you can see a bus coming, (below), which couldn't be seen before:



When I was done (below), there was a clear line-of-sight for about three hundred feet:


I did most of the work with a pair of pruning shears, but I cheated a little by using a saw. These were mostly vines, and the workers in a phone company truck said thanks, for getting the crap off their phone lines.
