So they told the police.
Another theory is that the man was the driver, and he was drunk (or less likely, had a suspended license), and so he drove home and talked his wife into claiming that she was the driver, the police came, breathalyzed her (nope, not drunk) ...
But anyways, bad drivers are not restricted to one sex or race. If women are statistically worse drivers then men, then I would imagine that the difference is minuscule, and really it wouldn't surprise me if it went the other way instead (but still, I would expect the difference to be minuscule.)

The Drive Side is Within
I'm a former member of the green party, and a former Marylander. I'm saddened to read about Ms. Pettigrew's death. My wife was also a hit and run victim, and the cops never followed it up. I have plenty of reasons to be upset with this story. The drunk husband story makes the most sense to me.
One odd thing about the story is the fact that this triathlon training ride was on a hybrid....? Then again, I train for centuries on my folder, so who am I to question?

I checked with Fish and Game about that a few years ago. It is ILLEGAL to shoot a deer out of season, even hen, it is illegal if you do not have a valid hinting license and unused deer tags. If all that hppens to apply, you nust still must still present the carcas to an authorized person so that the tag can be completed.
Very simply, if you hit a deer and it is flopping by the side of the road, it is illegal to, "take it out of its suffering."
Of course, I find the, "apparently thinking they ran over a deer,” a bit hard to believe.

RIP Natasha
I agree that the driver must have been drunk and had no reason to hit the only other vehicle on the road.
However, nobody has discussed the actual senario. Some have pointed out the left side damage. The scene was in a long 1/2 mile merge/turn right lane, with a major freeway inersection to the NW up hwy 202. Natasha was likely riding in the left tire track, in the dark. I would say that these long merge lanes are the worst places to be on a bike. The left tire track is the very LAST place i would be riding. The car has NO place/chance to swerve at the last second. My guess is she was riding a loop and
would have turned right next. FRAP is the place to be. Besides all this, i still don't understand why the SUV was in the turn lane. The house is straight thru on 202 AFAIK. Somehow, the " be seen " in the middle of the road philosophy just dosen't wash. IMO.

Since we're just speculating now, my thought is she was probably frap and the driver of the SUV swerved onto the shoulder to hit her to follow her lights. This presupposes an impaired/confused driver

What do you mean? Surely it will follow the standard procedure when a cyclist is killed by a motor vehicle driver:
1. Driver warned to be a bit more careful in future.
2. No police investigation.
3. No court case.
4. Cyclist's death used as an excuse to criticize cyclists for running red lights or for not wearing helmets.
Apart from the cyclist's family being required to pay for the dent to be removed from the driver's car - and perhaps for the driver to receive counseling (also paid for by the dead cyclist's family), I don't see what more the authorities could possibly do.
Now if the victim had been some kind of non-human animal, maybe then the authorities would spring into action on its behalf. Animal cops are very good at following up on the cases they're involved in, even when the perpetrator is driving a car.
