Ugly wind jacket

I was gonna get the black one ($75 medium), but well. Been thinking about it, and especially after going out after sunset to go grocery shopping, the Screaming Yellow one ($100) is looking really attractive. It's funny, usually black stuff costs more; but in this case, the really bright colors cost more.

Worth the extra cash? I thought my white CamelBak would be visible enough but eh......... Also, more importantly, I was previously thinking on bright blue; not sure how visible yellow is going to be during the day...? A blue tone seems more color grabbing:

Thoughts?

I'd get the red, but that's just me and red is one of my two favorite colors.

there are scotch-bright fabrics that are black under normal light and bright amber or white under direct light (flashlight/headlamp), perhaps you could look into a jacket like that... not sure who makes them... (obviously 3M), but... you know what I mean... who sells finished product...

That's interesting! Do they have the same problem as reflectors?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Reflectors are not as good as lights (point of the article) but they're way better than nothing. Use your brain.

I went on a group ride yesterday evening and it ended after sunset. Most riders were wearing dark colors and only half of them had blinkies. None had reflectors except some small piping on saddle bags or the backs of the shoes. At least riding in a group were able to parasitize the conspicuity of riders with bright clothes and lights. It's inexcusable idiocy...

if you are going to do much riding at night, reflective vests and ankle bands are a very good investment. Just wearing a brightly colored jacket doesn't do much for your visibility. Sheldon was talking about CPSC reflectors on the bike, which are largely ineffective. A good light gives a little more advance warning, but reflective wear is very visible. I don't think the reflective piping on most clothing is large enough to be particularly visible.

I wouldn't even consider buying a black jacket if there were any other choices. I wear a reflective vest over the top, but it's nice to have bright arm for signaling, or if I forget to wear the vest (it happens once in a while).

Good jackets last years. Saving $25 isn't enough for me to sacrifice any level of safety.
