philosophy of riding aside, (if a motorist revs his engine to pass but not in anger, do you notice the difference as a bicyclist?)

If mechbgon brought this up at the PTA meeting, a safe routes to school planning session, or senior mobility days at his local senior centers, that wit wouldn't seem so witty, would it?

One of my commutes is to the grocery store, and the bike lane southbound is *between* two stripes, but one goes AWOL for a large part of the year, so the de facto situation is that the motorists are driving in the bike lane because the left paint stripe is invisible. A casual observer would think the bike lane is to the right of the right-hand stripe, which is actually the parking lane. Fun.

Anyone: how well do the bike-lane stripes hold up in your area? Do they tend to be visible most of the year, or do they get worn away and stay missing for extended periods? Enquiring reptiles want to know

Over the years many a motorist who I happily ignore. But also a few police officers. The most recent cop was the same one who ticketed me four years ago for not obeying his opinion of where I should ride.

Is he still trying to ticket you? Is his schedule remotely predictable?

I haven't had trouble on Naamans Road, but I'm not usually there when traffic is heavy. [For non-local reference, I counted 16 right turn arrows/slip lanes in 2 miles in this area - between the shopping centers and Shipley Road right turning traffic is steady, while straight traffic has multiple lanes.]

My experience with the Police there has varied widely.

Clearly that is a right turn lane... and anyone that doesn't realize it should probably NOT be using the road for anything.

Of course if that arrow paint wears off.... well then, who knows.

Those arrows were only recently added. Prior to that, the right turn lanes existed without any arrow, which is just fine according to the MUTCD. Only if a straight thru lane is ending and turning into a right turn only lane does it require the arrow. I do like the arrows though as it gives me something easy to point to explaining why I am positioned where I am.

I take it that you aren't the cyclist who chased me down and called me a ******** idiot for riding in the straight thru lane?

The officer who ticketed me then pulled me over again claims to have given up on me. The second time around I had the paperwork with me from my appeal where the original ticket was thrown out in the CoCP (yes, I carried this with me for four years knowing I'd encounter him again). He "doesn't agree" with the court decision and told me I am "on my own" if something happens while I'm riding in the right lane.

FWIW, between my neighborhood and 202, there are over 20 right turn only/slip lanes in 3 miles.

the lines on the roads aren't visible much of the year? you don't say. imagine that. and they wear out too? yep. this happens.



I wonder if Mechbgon has brought his concerns about snowy roads or fading bikelane stripes to the local Safe routes to Schools coordinator or the local bike advocacy group, and ask them what he should do about faded bikelanes in his community.

I bet creating vacuous dinosaur placards wouldn't be on the list. A winter bike safety promotion campaign, drive safe around cyclists on snow, on the other hand, would likely nudge out the velociraptor.

Ah yes, the old self righteous cop enforcing their own personal rules. Right up there with the judge that makes up their own laws... So much for "Rules of the Road" as preached by folks such as John Forester... apparently such rules of the road don't apply if certain LEOs are on duty.

Most drivers and even some LEO's get it. It is far easier to remember and complain about the dim bulbs though.

When does Officer Friendly think he "rides with you"? You and every other cyclist are always "on your own" when something happens, anywhere.

I looked in the garage, but failed to find any sympathy for a rider that wants to complain about the weather under the guise of a safety witticism.

the snow blocks the bikeways sometimes and the snow on the road covers the road stripes and erodes lane striping? you don't say. amazing. those stripes get worn down coz you live someplace with freezing weather? Get on the city to FIX IT.
