I wear a helmet because I HAVE been knocked unconscious on pavement from a low speed bike crash - while not wearing a helmet. And they keep my head cooler with all the vents channeling air across my head :)

If you don't want to wear one, don't. I don't care, to be honest. But I will continue to wear one :)

I rode a good ride, got buzzed by an idiot, watched someone do a totally stupid move to get off an on-ramp, and probably didn't need to wear a helmet today because I avoided accidents.

I used to not wear a helmet when Cycleing as a teenager. My friend and I would go on 15 mile rides about once or twice a week. My dad told me that helmets would block your vision. Then years later I was in the USAF and biked to work. They required helmets on base so I had to get one. (It was a bell, still have it in a closet) First time I put it on, I realised that my dad was mistaken. There is no blockage of view by my helmet. Worn one ever since. I went several years without cycling. Then back in January I purchaced a bike to cycle again. I had forgotten all about my Bell helmet that I still had in the closet and purchased a new Gyro one. So I wear that one. While on the topic of safety, Why do people always wear shorts when cycling? I cycle in jeans. They add a layer of protection from falls. I remember a few falls when I was a teenager that ripped up my jeans in places, scrapped my skin up too, but it would have been much worse if I had been wearing shorts.

Oh my word!!! Telling the anti helmet crowd that you wear jeans will bring down a bunch of heat. I suspect that most of the anti helmet crowd are the full kitted racer wannabes that think that unless you are fully kitted in spandex you are a clod and not a "real" cyclist. Just mentioning that you wear a helmet is enough to be roundly dismissed.

You might want to check out other threads on what people wear while riding. A lot of posters there are just as pushy on telling you what you should or should not wear. BTW I am a member on good standing in wearing what ever I want to, and dont give a fig about what the "real" cyclist say. I might mention that in the last 4 years I have ridden over 10,000 miles of "not real" cycling. All while wearing a helmet of course!!!

I guess Lincoln is way different than Portland/Vancouver metro area. Every single person that's ever said I needed a helmet was dressed in cycling jersey and shorts, well except for the 2 cops that have said that, but they did have uniforms made from synthetic fibers. :)

Remember I am against helmet laws, and am for people cycling any way they want to. You and others almost alway attack anyone that says a helmet saved them from any kind of injury.

I'm in the SF area and see commuters with suits, jeans, whatever they wear to work, wearing helmets. Helmets are optional and so are long pants and sleeves. All those will protect you if you have a run into some asphalt, no matter who's asphault it is...

Yes, but the odds are more in my favour to NOT have as much injury with a helmet... That is pretty well a fact, the way I understand how things normally work. Now yes having a helmet on is not as good as most people may think, but I do think it's still better than not having a helmet on... Past experience and "common sense" tells me so... JMO :)

None of that true?? How about you show me any post that I have ever made saying I wanted helmet laws. Like wise show me any post that I ever made that I said bikers had to ride the way I dictate.

Have I suggested that any cyclist would be better off if they wore a helmet, you bet, but I have never dictated to anyone that they HAVE to wear a helmet.

did I miss something or is the English language under siege? I'm already shaving my chest and wearing a helmet everywhere just to get Rydabent off my back. now this guy wants all disagreements to be more agreeable. When did schools stop teaching debate?

You made a sweeping statement, were called out for being wrong, and then backpedaled rather than just admitting the statement was wrong. Calling that "moderating your stand" is a helluva positive spin.

Point remains: Not only are helmets unlikely to do a damn thing in a collision with another vehicle, they may not even help you solo.
