Again and Again it happens. Its totally predictable. Someone post a note about how a helmet helped prevent injury. Immediately----------------members of the anti helmet cult jump all over him and basically call him stupid. Disgusting and uncalled for.

That's because saying a helmet helped prevent injury is as lame as saying a helmet didn't prevent injury.

Yes, it's amazing how the non helmet group can "theorize" that nothing could/would have happened if he wasn't wearing a helmet, but we can't theorise that the helmet did do something... Maybe even "saved" his life...

I find that amazing too. It's just plain weird.

On the point of rock climbers wearing helmets, why? if they fall their dead so what good is the helmet? Football players wear helmets, why? their impact speed is far less then a cyclists so a helmet should not be required if cyclists don't need one, proof in point: players playing the game of British football don't bother with helmets or padding. I guess Americans are weenies.

Watched a "Gangland" show recently and one of the bankrobbers had a mask and a helmet on. He leaped the counter and hit his head which shoved his mask down and blocked his vision. He pulled both mask and helmet off and was later ID'd by a teller. I'd say this helmet gave him life.

Some guy: "I am 100% sure my helmet saved my life!!!"

Bare-header: "Actually, you really have no way of knowing whether it did or not."

Goofy BF helmeteers: "How come you're calling him stupid? Why can't he have a theory too? And assorted other gibberish!"

Climbers wear helmets because of rock and ice fall. Things fall of cliffs and roll down mountains and if they bonk you on the head it can really do some damage.

As I've pointed out before, there are at least two key differences between helmet attitudes of climbers and cyclists: 1) climbers never insist that other climbers wear helmets, and 2) climbers don't believe that helmets will magically protect them from anything bad that could possibly happen.
Some guy: "I am 100% sure my helmet saved my life!!!" "Saving my life" can mean many things... From not loosing 6 months worth of memory and can still tie my shoes, to I lost 6 months of memory but can still support myself financially...

Bare-header: "Actually, you really have no way of knowing whether it did or not." NO I don't, but you don't really know how much the helmet helped me either... or how it would have turned out if I wasn't wearing a helmet...

Goofy BF helmeteers: "How come you're calling him stupid? Why can't he have a theory too? And assorted other gibberish!" Everybody can have a theory but really... FACT is... He was wearing a helmet, fact is... He walked away from the accident,... "Theory" is, if he wasn't wearing a helmet the same could have been said but it would only be theory, not fact... there is A BIT OF A DIFFERENCE...

I see you've ditched the other stuff and gone straight to gibberish. Saves time, I suppose.

My comment on the posted picture of a helmet was not pro nor anti helmet, just a comment on what such a picture demonstrates. And if the poster did not want to discuss then why was it posted? Nobody called him/her stupid.

Actually it is pretty logical. If someone posts that a helmet prevented injury, apparently it did. They are here to report it. But then the anti helmet cult has never let common sense and logic stand in the way of "what they know".

You, describing your position as logical. Dramatic irony is alive and well and living in the helmet thread.

That is one way, a very polite way to describe such a position. Very gentlemanly of you, sir. I shall refrain from describing it with more dramatic flourish.

So me the flaw in my logic. The man says his helmet prevented injury. He is here to state that. Therefore it is logical that his helmet did indeed prevent injury!!!

Hmmm, well I don't recall other cyclists insisting that other cyclists must wear helmets, this whole thread as been a discussion mostly on the validity of the safety of helmets not forcing one group to wear or not wear helmets. Nor did any cyclist here that I've read that wears helmets think for one minute that their helmet will protect them magically from anything bad. And a bonk on the head is a bonk on the head regardless if your a cyclist or a rock climber, it may or may not do any damage.

You're just being over dramatic by saying all the stuff you said.

I have what I consider to be a fairly healthy fear of dragons, so I place a rune-covered rock in my yard to ward them off. Thankfully, it's working, as no dragons have yet laid siege.

So until you hear a news story about a dragon incinerating a man in California, just remember: break out those warding runes and you'll be fine. I'm living proof.

[Partial QUOTE=closetbiker;13304258] ...
What's wrong with bicycle helmets? and really, why would anyone have a problem seeing someone on a bike look like this?
Closetbiker; I guess the real question is "how would these pretty girls look on a ventilator and laying in a coma 2 years after a bike crash?"

I've been riding regular for 43+ years. I bought a Bell helmet from the LBS before I bought my first bike. Although it has been replaced several times (mostly under Bell warrantee) after crashes that tore them up pretty badly and destroyed the bikes, but without any damage to my head. I am still riding a helmet (mostly Bells) every time, even if just around the block to try out a tune up.

On the side; One of my hobby's is to hit yard sells and pick up good used/clean helmets; often for 25 cents or so. Any time I see a kid or an adult riding without cover, I nicely ask them if they have a helmet (this can earn some funny looks). If they don't have one, I ask them if they would like a free one (kids have to go asked their parent for permission)?

If they would like one, I send them to see the wife and they get to pick out any one they like and get a free fitting, helmet use lesson, and sometime a free bike fix/tuneup/tire pump-up. I have about 50 helmets in stock right now and have given away about 20 already this year.

When the kids outgrow their helmet, then know they can return and trade up to a larger size or different style. One single mom just stopped by with her daughter to see if she could trade up her Barbie helmet for something less girlish. Fixed her up with a used Trek one.

Interesting to note that the original Barbie helmet had a bad crack in it and serious road rash. The mother related that the girl had zoomed out of the garage with a doll in one hand and took a bad spill hitting her head on the curb right at the bottom of her driveway. Clearly she would have been badly injured or worse if not for her Barbie hat. Of course all the experts know that one doesn't need a helmet for short trips, etc.

I encourage others to take up the hobby!

I, along with many other thread participants, often get lectured about helmets while riding. It also is easy to find multiple example of people saying "Wear a helmet!" on BF, including right here on this thread. Moreover, it is also easy to find many, many examples of BF members posting that helmets have saved lives in situations ranging from low-speed tip-overs to having having heads run over by - seriously - trucks.

So I can only conclude that you are just not reading for comprehension.

There are 209 posts for one very stupid thread, and I don't have time nor wish to be entertained by reading such dribble as what has occurred here, so I'll assume there may have been some people here that may have responded in the manner in which you speak. But the point of this thread was a discussion on wearing helmet habits that then degraded into the validity of wearing a helmet to which has not been proven either way.

A friend of mine is leaving a job, going to contract work tele-commuting from a full time in-office position. During her exit interview, it turns out that the person she was working for considered her, called her, this person's Administrative Assistant. That's not her job title, not the job she applied for, but all of a sudden, many things that had gone on regarding her boss's comments regarding her job performance made a lot of sense. She realized that she and her boss had been working for years with a completely different concept of what her job was.

You remind me of her, minus the epiphany.

Just for the record I have never yelled at anyone that they should wear a helmet. Keep in mind I am against MHLs too.
