There will be no close calls or crashes, and I will still get to my destination stress and incident free. Isn't that the goal?
Come drive in CA where "safe following distance" is an invitation for everyone to just fill right in... Here merge lanes are the norm on freeways... and you are supposed to "zipper" merge... but some folks just don't allow room, where as others squeeze past and try to merge after all the people who have patiently waited their turn. Extremes exist on both ends of the scale (including motorists that use the bike lanes to bypass patient motorists, and then try to squeeze in).

As far as letting folks merge in front of you easily... you may find you never go anywhere here.

Being polite and taking your turn, but not being a push over (for the next 20 vehicles) is the key to operating in traffic here.

The little silver car did some wrong things, but the cyclist was also in the wrong by coming up the driver's side of the silver car. In that situation you should pick a lane and stay in the middle of that lane. He rode up very close to the driver's side of the silver car when it was obvious that the silver car was changing lanes.

Made cyclist look really bad.

You know people, they'll find any reason to buy something fancy for their cars...

Way to pick the least important point out of that post. You guys are all over it.

My main point still stands. Either that whole incident was staged; or that cyclist has absolutely zero situational awareness; and is a hot-headed jerk.

CB, mirrors are REAL easy to break off; my 14-y-o daughter was playing in our driveway one evening last fall, after dark, and was running up & down our driveway. She took her mom's mirror right off her truck with her shoulder, barely felt it, no bruising.

To the doubters: staged or not, the bike made the lane change first; Silverdoosh just decided he/she was GONNA make that lane change, didn't care, even AFTER the rider made his presence known, the car kept pulling up.

True. The cyclist did cut-off the car that was already signaling and attempting to make the lane change.

Funny, I didn't see a signal. Not until AFTER the bike changed lanes.

And, FTR, a signal doesn't just mean you can move over; you have to be sure your way is clear, first.

And, FTR, a pass cannot be made until the way is clear. Means the car in front is not already partially in the lane.

Y'know what, I'm done, Mr. Trifle; you can flap all you want, last word doesn't equal right word. We could go back and forth, neither convincing the other, except I'm bored already.

Guess it's just good that we live in separate cities; I WOULD be on the bike, car-free for 7+ years, and if you'd do that around me, we'd have another video.

Ignore.

Why bother putting the 4 way flashers on? Note to self: only do on very congested road.

Thanks for the info from you and Genec. My last car was a small Saturn for which the side mirror covers were part of the solid plastic door mold. No way a cyclist could knock that off.

Well it was the only element of the original argument that could be met with actual data. Subjective perspectives...well, just gotta let those fall flat. Nothing one can do with those.

You often have said that it is not a race out there, and with that I would agree. Those who push and squeeze to get ahead gain so little in actual progress, (sometimes nothing) as do those who actively try to "block 'em out".

The incident posted in the OP will never happen to me, not on my bike and not in my car.

Yup, it is NOT a race... extend courtesy whenever you can... but don't expect it to come back. This dovetails nicely with Forester's mantra: "Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles." Best to act like the driver of a vehicle so you are predictable; just don't expect to be treated like the driver of a vehicle.

With regard to the OP and the video... what I saw appeared to be a motorist who didn't wait their turn, and a cyclist that also failed to be courteous... with the end result being two buttheads clashing. The cyclist was wrong, but so was the motorist in trying to squeeze out the cyclist.... and the end was not justified.

Agreed. I don't even see what there is to debate about regarding who was right or wrong(er).
