What can I do about riding on the road?

I just started riding a 20 mile coarse and i love it. The only problem is i cant find a rout that doesnt have this small streach of busy road with no side walks. I hate riding on it. I was thinking a mirror but ppl say it doesnt help, maybe a blinking back reflector but i dont want to piss off drivers. What can i do to reduce chance of getting hit?

Lights are good. Be visible. Take the lane if you need it. Be careful.

Take a Road 1 Course from the League of American Bicyclists, or learn vehicular cycling techniques.

Lights and learn how to ride in traffic. Franklin's "Cyclecraft" is a good start.

Please, always have and use a light. Even in broad daylight it can be the small something that gets a motorist to see you.

How long is the stretch? If it is short, can you just walk the bike on the shoulder?

Wear high vis clothing. A bright rear light is useful even in daylight. A mirror IS helpful, IMO head mounted is best, it gives the most view; I find that bike mounted mirrors are next to useless but use what works for you. Ride predictably, do not weave, do not do anything a car driver would find surprising. Do not hug the gutter/curb - if you leave yourself 3 inches to your right, some drivers will think that 3 inches is all you need. Demand the space you need to be safe (YOU are the one that decides what's safe for you, even a cyclist, when in a car, can't really see hazards that are dangerous to cyclists), but do not RELY on being given it; have an escape plan (this is what they taught us in driving school as well so this is no surprise).

Don't listen to the fashion fools, get a mirror (consider eye glasses mirror).

Mirrors are ok (don't use one myself). Just remember that a mirror is good for "no go", but when you are going to go, there is no substitute for turning your head.

I think you need to speak with some other people.

I have been riding with a mirror since the early 80's and find it EXTREMELY helpful.

One thing to add is that there is safety in numbers. If you have a local cycling group then ride with them. The little blinky lights you get at the local bike shop don't do jack in the day time.
