i'm really troubled by this. in new york there are hit and run reports on the news almost every night. there are signs around my neigborhod saying things like 'a pedestrian was struck and killed, if you have any information...' is this happening in your area of the country as well?? i cannot believe how sick and wrong this is and it seems to be happening more often.

The Detroit area is no differant.
Just the other night while watching the news (which I rarely do because it depresses me) I saw a report of a person who had stopped to aid a pedestrian who was injured in a hit and run, was herself hit and killed by a driver that took off. Though the police did indeed catch that person.

They happen fairly frequently round here, some making big and drawn out news stories due to position of drivers involved.

Fortunately I haven't seen it much around here ... in fact automobile/bicycle accidents just don't seem to happen that often (though once always feels too frequent). If I remember right there were only 4 automobile related cycling deaths in this state last year.

most (almost all) hit and runs I hear about involve pedestrians, not cycles

Not bike-related, but just a couple days ago a woman was struck on the freeway here in Houston. According to witnesses, the vehicle hit her head on, going full speed (which was probably something like 70-80 on this freeway), and she was thrown nearly 20 ft in the air. Now I don't have details why she was on the freeway (broken down car?), but the fact is that the person who struck her apparently didn't even attempt to stop. A startling number of people have little or no respect for life, whether it's their own or someone else's. Karma awaits...

Most of our hit and runs are vechile hitting another vehicle or property, not many bike accidents.

Seeing as how you & i are in the same area, yeah.
the noah budnick thing is a kick in the ass. i just found out this afternoon, and my commute home was a lot more tense and tentative than normal. hope that works out for him.

Well you gotta remember, we have a LOT more cars and cyclists in NYC in a much denser environment.

Lots of hit and runs in my area, not just on bicycles, but mostly on cars.
