I use a Popsicle stick or tongue depressor or a steel spatula (ask your favorite chemist for some). Works great, and if you're careful, there's no mess. I'd also use a bigger syringe, so there's less need to fill it.

Industrially, they're usually filled from the nozzle end, i believe.
