One way to remember how to install or remove pedals is this. Put the wrench on the pedal so that the handle points up. Then push rear to remove or forward to firm.

Beat me to it - a good rule of thumb!

If you STILL can't get the pedal off easily (since you've now cranked it down so hard ), slip a length of pipe or something similar over the handle of your wrench; a longer handle makes MUCH more leverage. I use the steerer on an old fork for this kind of thing all the time.
