newbie needs help... will this work?

on my current ride (sirrus modified with TT handlebar setup) has ultegra 8/9 speed barcon with sora crank and sora front & rear deraileur. i'm looking to upgrade the crank to a Ultegra Crank Set. i rarely use the smallest chainring in the front.. and the largest on my current setup is a 50T.

so the question is.. can i just change the crankset, or would i have to be changing the chain & the front & rear deraileurs as well? if in the event i have to change the deraileurs.. then what if i were to change the rear 8 speed cassette to a 9 speed.. would i need to get a new cog?

You neeed crank and matching BB. Chain is not an issue.Your triple derailers will work with a double. 9 speed derailers don't require a different chain either.

so does that mean i can just change the crankset to a double and then get a matching BB and the rear cassette to a 9 speed while leaving everything else sora components?

Yeah, but with a 9 speed cassette, you also need the 9 speed chain.

thank you sydney.. i'm in the process of learning how to do all the work myself.. so first thing on the list would be the repair stand and tool kit.. then the zinn book and then the components..

Sydney, will the Sora rear derailer have enough travel for the 9 speed cassette?
