Rear Disc Break and Pads Temperamental!

Hello

As said in the title, My rear break is causing me hassle. The back break does not perform to a good standard unless i wet the brakes with water before a section. I tried swapping the old pads out, which brought some success for a few weeks but now the problem has returned. It just doesn't lock up at all until i pour water onto the brake pads and disc and then bobs your uncle it works like a machine! But only for one section of a downhill if i'm lucky which is a problem. It only lasts a couple minutes, sometimes alot less depending on the heat and humidity. Can anyone help me? Thanks <The breaks are hydraulic disc breaks by the way!

Somehow I don't think "hydrating" brakes corresponds with any manufacturer's operating instructions. Maybe learn to use the front brake or replace your brakes with some designed for your usage?

Water on the brakes is a new one. It sounds like a combination of glazed pads and a glazed rotor. The first thing I would try is rubbing down the pads and the rotor with 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper, then cleaning them with alcohol and reinstalling. This will take care of the glazing. You may also have issues with the air in the system so bleeding and fluid replacement are a good idea.

Thank you very much for your reply It's the second time this has occurred, any reason you think this might be happening?

Overheating to fading while descending has likely glazed both the pads and the rotor. You might be able to "revive" the pads through the method described above, but you more likely need a more aggressive pad material. The rotor is never gonna be the same. Replace it or the problem will almost certainly recur.
