How to adjust front derailleur with cable bolted to frame style cable.

I looked around on Sheldons page and did not find proper adjustment for the style of derailleur I have on my bike. The cable on my current setup clamps to the frame. The cable runs from the shifter, thru the derailleur to the screw that it clamps to on the fame. I am attempting to change the current style to a top clamp style. The lbs guy says that it won't work and to go back to the old style. He also said that the angle of the derailleur is wrong. Is these any pictures that I can look at to get the correct derailleur to seat post? I am really thinking about going to a different frame.

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

You must have front derailleur cable housing that runs along the top tube and then down the seat tube and the housing itself pushes on the front derailleur's operating arm while the inner cable is held stationary. This is often done on CX and MTBs to keep the cable from running under the bottom bracket shell. You would have to reroute the derailleur cable along the down tube and under the bottom bracket shell and then up to the front derailleur as is common with road frames.
