Chains interchengeability

Hi!

Probably this has already been asked but I am on my way to bed and cannot find it right now.

I am upgrading some 5 speeds bike (old racers/touring/city bikes) which have a chain with 8 mm wide pin. Is it OK to replace those chains with chains for 6 and 7 speeds, or should i stick to exactly the same pin length? The chains for 6-7 speeds (which I already have) have pin lengths of 7.1 or 7.3 mm sometimes

thanks a lot!
