I have a squeaky seat on my bike. The squeaking appears to originate from a type of mechanical twisting/bending motion, it is not due to springs or fabric in the seat. I tried to spray some WD40 on the underside of the seat, but that didn't help at all.

I realize this is a hard question to answer, but is there some advice that can typically be given in the case of a squeaky seat?

What should I lubricate with? WD40? Oil? Grease? How should I lubricate? Do I need to remove the seat and disassemble it, or can I just spray directly onto it like I previously attempted?

In general, what is likely to work in a case such as this one?

A squeaky bicycle seat might not seem like a big deal at first -- until you pedal along, racking up the miles, and it becomes more annoying with every passing minute. If the squeak goes away when you stand on the pedals, you have a fair amount of evidence that the noise emanates from the seat. Your work to fix the squeak needs to address the components of the seat: the saddle and a pair of built-in, thin metal rails underneath the saddle.
[h=2]Step 1[/h]Spray lubricant where the seat rails run through the saddle clamp, which sits atop the seat post and holds the seat in place.
[h=2]Step 2[/h]Wiggle the saddle. If it is loose, tap the nose of the saddle up or down to level the seat. Hold the saddle in the correct position. Tighten the clamp with an Allen key or wrench.
[h=2]Step 3[/h]Test-ride the bike. If the squeak has gone away, you are finished. If the squeak remains, continue with more in-depth maintenance.

Some of the answer depends on the seat's construction. Which brings me to ask what kind of seat do you have? Photos? Andy.

What type of seat is it ? If it's a Selle Anatomica , they have a history of that problem. Mine squeaks, it's the bolt at the front that is the problem in that case. They used to talk about the problem on their web page. I have no idea if it is still listed there.

Mark the height of your seat post, unscrew the clamp, wipe off the old gritty grease, apply new friction paste and put the seat post back in. The problem is most likely solved. You should be able to get friction paste from almost any bike shop.

I had that issue with a Selle Anatomica when I transferred it to a new bike. A bit of overdue tension adjustment and a few miles and the issue went away.

My current bike has the first comfort saddle I've ridden. It gets noisier all the time. At first I mistook the squeaks for bottom bracket troubles, because the noise resonates oddly through the fat aluminum tubes. But it's just the saddle.

Only cure might be to disassemble it and wax the various plastic mating surfaces. Oil or grease might work for a few minutes before it attracted gritty debris. Not worth the effort. Eventually I'll replace the saddle, but there's really not much wrong with this one. I'll just keep riding and ignore the squeaks. Reminds me to focus on pedaling more smoothly, since it squeaks more when I bounce.
