Chain line noise. Only when pedaling makes a "clinking" type noise. New bike. Removed and checked chain. Installed new Essor wheelset, new Shimano freewheel. Removed and checked bottom bracket, moved chain ring to inside of crank arm. Still makes the noise. Any other ideas? Acts like chain is hanging up on freewheel. It's an 1/8 chain I believe. Try manipulating the rear D by pulling on the cable under the down tube or holding the shifter between gears. Can you make it stop? Does it do the same in all gears? Check for irregular chain links or sticky links? Check that chain matches drie train (11s on an 11s?). Rear D straight?

SS bike?
You can build an SS bike to use a 3/32 chain, but AFAIK you can't use an 1/8" chain on any reasonably common derailer gear bike.

And I don't think there is full compatibility between 1/8 and 3/32 chains, rings and sprockets despite the pitch being the same.

Much missing info. If you want us to use our wits we need something to work with.
Does the noise happen regularly or randomly? If regularly is it by crank or wheel rotation, or some other rhythm?
Does it occur when pedaling only?
Does it occur only when applying greater pedal pressure?
Have you returned it to the shop that sold it to you under warranty, or is it a self-build?
Why did you choose to try the things you did?

We are having to guess that it is a single speed bike due to the mention of a 1/8 inch chain. If so most likely is indeed that the chain is too tight, a common basic mistake. Should be easily deflected with your finger at the tightest point in the crank rotation.

More info. Single speed Aventon Mataro. The noise is only on the down push of crank rotation. Same noise no matter how loose the chain is. Does not make the noise freewheeling nor when turning pedals by hand. Thanks again

Kickstand?

I re tensioned the chain and for kicks.. turned it upside down and applying pressure with a rag to the rear wheel and turning the cranks, I can make the noise appear. I notice wobble in the new freewheel and the noise is about every crank revolution. Thoughts?

What kind of BB is it? Cartridge? how old?

Does it happen on both pedal strokes, or just one side? Does it still happen when you pedal out of the saddle? What if you go no hands? What type of handlebars do you have?

If it's happening exactly with each pedal rotation, it can't be chain or FW related unless you're running a 1:1 gear ratio...

Whatever it is, it has to be something on a frequency equal to your pedaling. So that's -- BB, pedals, cranks themselves, chainring, saddle clamp, handlebars.

Do you notice any similar ticking noise when going over bumps?

Single speed with 46 tooth front. 16 tooth rear. Seat post and handle bar are carbon fiber as are the seat rails. Noise is the same in or out of the saddle. All parts are new. Chain line is okay. New Shimano freewheel does have a wobble. Chainring does not seem out of round. Thanks everyone for helping me with this mystery

At some point you need to have the people who help you actually place their hands on the bike. Andy.

Could it be a bad pedal bearing? would you describe it as a pinging, clicking, or scraping noise? One thing you might try is removing all the chainring bolts, cleaning, greasing and reinstalling to proper torque. I had a weird *ping* sound during hard pedaling that was fixed that way.

I have just received a 2017 Specialized Langster Street and have the exact same issue. Was originally told by mechanics at shop that the rear cassette teeth were too narrow for the chain provided by Specialized. They ordered me a new rear free wheel cassette and the sound is somewhat diminished but still there.

This is my first single speed bike so I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Take it back where you bought and insist that they resolve problem. That's the benefit of buying a new bike from a shop.

I put on a narrower bottom bracket spindle. It came with a 107 and I put on a 103. Whisper quiet now. If your lbs is close, I would take it back and have them make it right.
