chain suck?
hi. i try to oil and lube my components every so often, but this one has me stumped. while coasting, my chain starts "buckling" or releasing tension and rattles between the chainrings and back wheel along the top of the chain. Do i need to do a heavier lube of the bottom or rear? thanks!

This suggests you have a problem in the rear hub in the cassette carrier, assuming cassette and not freewheel.
Both have pawls and ratchets that when pedaling lock the cassette/freehub/freewheel to the wheel but release
when coasting. If something is catching in the pawls/ratchet then you might have this problem. Parktool.com
has a repair manual on their site that discusses how to R&R the freehub for cleaning. Youtube will also have
videos of same. The assumption is you are not pedaling and the chain is fixed in position and then jumps.

Yep, sounds like maybe the seal is dragging or it just needs to be taken apart and cleaned.
OP mentions lube but doesn't mention cleaning at all. Might just be caked with dirt. Always do the easy and cheap thing first.

thanks all. early this summer during a visit to my bike shop i asked the mechanic why my rear hub was so loud, ratcheting sound constantly when i was coasting. he said, some hubs are just like that. i asked because it wasn't my experience.
maybe it was a precursor to this issue! will get on it
