Stem question
I am changing out my stem and handle bars on my touring bike. The clamping cap that retains the the handle bar is 2 separate pieces vs. 1 piece. Is one "stronger" than the other?

Are you saying that instead of a "faceplate", your stem has two "U" clamps?
Neither is going to hold the bars better than the other IMO.
I prefer two separate clamps myself.

The usual failure mode with stems is to have those tiny (M5) bolts strip out or be cross threaded. Given a proper bar/stem fit (and not 25.4 with 26.0), proper assembly and torque I highly doubt strength will be a factor. Andy.

Tighten the bolts in stages and in a "cross-pattern" to get to the final torque. Also, be sure the gaps at the top and bottom of each clamping piece are uniform when the clamps are fully tightened.
