Trying to remove freehub, 10 mm hex too small

But I can insert a 3/8" socket extension and it fits tight. Anybody tried removing a freehub too big for a 10 mm hex key with a 3/8" socket extension?

I don't think you're getting engagement with the 3/8" extension if the 10mm is too big.

I've had freehubs that were 12mm, 13mm and 14mm hex, have you tried other sizes?

Using two hex keys (8 and 4 mm), I found out the size of the hex keys required is 12 mm. Yes, 3/8" is smaller but that's the flat surface dimension. From edge to edge is very close to 12 mm. I gave it a go and "freed" the freehub easily. So for posterity, if you have a 12 mm free hub, a 3/8" socket extension will work just fine :-)

Only if the freehub is really loose - if it is on tight the 3/8" square will just mess up the hex. Use the 3/8" socket extension at your own risk.
