DuraAce bar end shifting trouble

Setting up a new touring bike with the following relevant equipment:
-Shimano BS79 10-speed bar end shifters
-Shimano RD-M781 10-speed rear derailleur long cage
-Shimano HG81 SLX10 cassette

Limit and B screws are where they need to be and cable tension seems to be fine. When shifting up and down however I can see the rear derailleur moving but the chain isn't shifting or even trying to catch. When I increase the tension I then lose the high gears. I've added a spacer to the cassette, all equipment is new including cables and housing. The only things I can think of are that the pull ratio is off somehow but I assumed all newer Shimano stuff would play well together, is that not the case? I'm also using an 11-speed SRAM chain but that shouldn't matter, should it?

I think you're going to have trouble mixing 10 speed mountain and road parts.

IIRC, they're not compatible.

Meaning your shifter isn't compatible with your derailleur.

I think I remember something about the shadow derailleurs also being weird, but regardless, you've got incompatibilities.

Get a mountain shifter.

I would recommend the 9 speed stuff. there was more cross compatibility with that set up.

This is correct, the only real way to make the combination of parts you have work (10 speed road shifter/10 speed shadow MTB rear Derailleur), is to get a WolfTooth Tanpan https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/...roducts/tanpan

Interesting, learned something new! I didn't think I'd have trouble mixing but it looks like I was misinformed, thanks all!

A 9 speed Shimano mountain rear derailleur will work fine with your 10 speed road shifters. 10 speed mountain will not.

A possibly better option is to keep the existing XT RD-M781 rear derailleur and replace the barcons with Microshift BS-M10 bar end shifters. These are compatible with Shimano 10 speed MTB RDs (aka 10 speed Dyna Sys). That way you can have 10 speed shifting without giving up the superior, longer, cable pull of the Dyna Sys system. This combination is starting to show up on 10 speed touring bikes like the Novara Randonee.
