BB Guide Pin

I'm trying to replace the cup and cone bottom bracket in an 86 Technium with a cartridge style BB. Unfortunately there's a pin (not a screw) holding the cable guide on that gets in the way. Should no feel free to just try and knock it out? I'd rather not go ahead and remove it if its gonna be a pain or impossible to get it back in.

Are you talking in terms of...

If so then as per that thread it is an aluminium rivet. Drill it out and find a friend with a rivet gun...

However have you tried wiggling things about? Sometimes I find a BB spindle does not wish to come out for the same reason until I wiggle it about. Sometimes it takes a lot of wiggling.

Or use glue or double-sided tape or a sheet metal screw, or tap the rivet hole and use a short bolt to hold the guide in place. It doesn't take much; cable tension will keep it on the bottom bracket shell. You just want to prevent it from sliding around.

I can get the old BB out no problem. Issue is I cant get the cartridge in flush. I can wiggle it around the rivet but its not centered.

Thanks for the link.

That's what I figured. C'est la vie. Maybe I'll seek out a new cup n cone BB. I'm currently searching for a click after a crash and replacing the BB is the next trial and error step.

just grind or file away some of the rivet's inner part.... the flaring that holds the rivet in place is most important towards the BB shell... the longer part is only there in case the rivet is used in thicker material.

cable guide remains in place... rivet is shortened to allow cartridge BB assy. installation.

done.
