Unlike the other companies, Campagnolo didn't switch to flush riveted chains until they moved to 10 cogs.

That's right, I have a Campagnolo maintenance manual from the late '90s, 9sp era. It specifies using Campagnolo chain pliers for installing/uninstalling the chain, but doesn't say anything about using new pins.

I thought when the 10 speed came out that Campagnolo had a special chain tool that could peen the pin with a flat plate that flipped over the end when driving the pin back into the chain.

Kinda funny thing, I've broken two quick links while mountain biking. They snapped off and flew into the woods like a shot. I pushed a pin mostly out, removed one of the female ends and rejoined using the same pin. Rode back to the finish with no issues. I then promptly forgot about what I did and rode several more times on each chain. Once I realized this I shrugged and just keep riding the chains and now have more time on them than I did when they each had a quick release.
Just finished a 46 mile/6,000 foot MTB race on one of them this past weekend. Dissenting opinions seem to be frowned up in this thread but hey sometimes it works out ok.
I will say that now I carry a spare quick link in my tool pack.
