Two reasons occur to me: some tiny number of folks might be bothered by the slightly wider Q factor, but that's not much of a reason. The other reason is more compelling - Shimano Australia no longer stocks any 130 middle rings, bastards. Is it the same story in the US?

Pisses me off how triples are being deprecated; triple x corncob is perfect for almost anything, especially @ 11s. Compacts suck.

Bikes: 2008 Novara Randonee - love it. Previous bikes:Motobecane Mirage, 1972 Moto Grand Jubilee (my fave), Jackson Rake 16, 1983 C'dale ST500.

For those who have not noticed, the OP has decided to stay with a triple.

I think there would be a market for a nice HT II "compact" triple with tooth counts like the Sugino XD. Shimano had some non USA Trekking triple cranks for 9 speed but I think even those have gone to doubles.

As are the mountain bike cranksets of 44 32 22, I use an xt one, but deore I think are still around.
I believe the latest ones are 44 32 24 or thereabouts

In any case, for heavily loaded touring and in mountainy terrain, variations of these work extremely well and suit the speeds one rides at with a heavy bike and dealing with steep hills.
