Chain ring compatibility
Are all 5 bolt 110bcd chain rings compatible with each other? I have a 1990 Trek 7000 with an LX crank and looking at it now I see how worn the teeth are on the outer ring compared to the middle and inner rings. Not surprising given the age. I've been looking around and mtb rings are now 4 bolt, and only some 10sp road rings seem to be available. I know most Shimano parts are interchangeable, would other brands be also. I see Shimano, FSA, SRAM and even Campy road gear, but no MTB stuff. I want to swap that out before I change the chain, which I already have. The rest of the gearing is a 10sp mix of Deore and XT and I have a KMC X10sl chain waiting.
Edit, I should say MOST. There are definitely some oddball rings out there too that say 110.

I had to go to my LBS and have them find replacements for my large and small chain rings. Ebay is a source, but I could never find exactly what I needed. I have a hybrid so it was MTB based chain rings. We ended up with two different manufacturers in the end for the two chain rings. For some reason chain ring replacement is a mystery for many. Even the LBS folks took a half hour to figure it all out. I took both chain rings into the LBS so they could see them also.

How about...
Shimano Deore 46T Chainring 110mm BCD Silver Alloy | Bikewagon.com
...seems like a pretty inexpensive way to go.

These aren't cheap, but among the best. https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/ta-c...ngs.php#zephyr

I ended up ordering an FSA. I looked at the FSA rings on my road bike and decided they would fit just fine on my mtb. Same pattern and cutout as Shimano. I found a website that specifically said they would work too.

I finally installed it last night after being on a bike-friendly European vacation (Amst, Copenhagen, Oslo, Bergen) and it fit just fine. I haven't had a chance to try it, and won't until tomorrow. I like the look of the black FSA ring over the aluminum Shimano 36 underneath.
I showed my wife the old chainring and even she could see how worn out it was compared to the new one. There was nothing left to the teeth, no wonder it would slip under hard pedaling.
