What kind of grease to use to repack bearings?

Can I use an automotive bearing grease to repack the wheel and crank bearings on an old mtb? Can I also use a regular solvent to clean up the bearings prior to repacking them?

Thanks.

Should work okay if you have some around the garage. Just make sure you use a lot of ventilation if your solvent is all freaky...

Marine bearing grease works very nicely for repacking bearings. Yes, you can use automotive grease to repack bearings guilt free. And by regular solvent if you mean something like kerosene or wd40, that will work too. But i only use simple green, its non toxic.

I really REALLY like the waterproof marine grade grease that comes in the little tins at the local autostore here. $2.59 for 20oz and it makes my open cup & cones last a LOT longer before having to repack.

Another vote for Marine Trailer Bearing grease. $3 a can and it's as good or better than what the shops use
