Removing a freehub but not sure what the process is with this through axle

Rather than write my tale of woe, I'm going to post a link to another post where someone was having the same problem - they seem to have sorted it out but never posted the explanation. I am switching from shimano to XD on some Hunt 650b wheels, and both ends of the axle just look round with a flat section - it might be 17mm? I don't have a 17mm spanner right now to find out.

How do I get this freehub body off? Do I just need two flat 17mm spanners and twist off the end cap?

Adding a couple photos of my situation - to remove these end caps is it just two 15mm spanners? there's nowhere for an axle tool or hex wrench like i see in instructional videos.
