Should these chrome (plastic) pieces be removable?

Any trick to getting them off?

Yes they come off, but you already now that so please ignore. Interesting that they are plastic, though.

They're not plastic.

And for posterity, I find hitting them with some penetrating spray, and then grabbing them with pliers (the kind with an arched section of teeth) through a rag and giving them a wiggle frees them up.
