Bikes: Seriously downsizing.

What was Shimano thinking?

The proprietary DT shifter base is bad enough, Why did they also tap the shifter bosses in a non-standard size? They're not M4, M5, or 10-32. If I knew what they were I could adapt a standard shifter to fit these damn things! I'm about 10 seconds away from running a M5 tap through them and be done with it.

They're M4.5. I forget the thread pitch. Just tap them to M5 x .8. I've done it to the Shimano bosses.I believe the drill bit you need is a #19.

Bikes: Too many to list here check my signature.

it is my understanding that you can use any shimano shifter on those bosses, with a 4.5mm screw, but it may not look pretty.

BTW I have a frame with those bosses but the dropout is drilled for a Portcatena device crazy

In a way, I'm somewhat comforted that I have no idea what this thread is about.

this sort of thing was why I was an anything-but-Shimano guy back in the day. They have gotten somewhat better.

Well, there were "Japanese standard" downtube bosses and "European standard" downtube bosses back then. Shimano offered shift levers in both standards if you knew who to ask. The "Japanese standard" is much less common since it only appeared on high-end Japanese frames of the '70's and '80's. Let's see you find Campy shift levers to fit those bosses.

I remember sorting out the packages of Dura-Ace DT shift levers into the two types back at Euro-Asia Imports. I bet there's still some of the M4.5 hardware kits sitting there.
