[Dutch bikes] Replacing Rollerbrake drum brake + Nexus 7s shifter

Hello,

I bought a second hand Gazelle bike, and would like to change two items:

1. The front brake uses a Shimano Rollerbrake BR-IM41 and is a bit weak; I'd like to replace it with the BR-C6000 which is supposed to be the strongest from Shimano. Are those 100% compatible ?

2. The barrel adjuster on the Nexus 7s shifter is DOA: Should I get the exact same replacement, or is there a better alternative ?

I'm surprised the gears mostly work with the red marks so badly adjusted.

Thank you.

All Shimano rollerbrakes fit a ring of teeth on the rear hub; you can make that upgrade with no issues.

If the shifter works, you could just make shift cable tension adjustments at the shift mechanism by the rear hub, if the barrel there still turns. Or you could pull the cable, cut the shift cable housing somewhere, and put in an inline cable tension adjuster. You may want to replace the cable and housing, if the shift cable is rusty or nasty.

If the shifter is shot, replace it with another Nexus 7 shifter

Thank you.

Here's what the shifter looks like at this point:

Bikes: 8

Fit of new housing and cable is in order .. Past due , hence the Duct tape..

screw the adjuster back in when you do..

does it not shift ? A picture cannot show that ..

download the Applicable Manuals.. they're even in French..

I think Bob has it right. I don't think your barrel adjuster is broken.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll get a new cable + housing tomorrow and see how it goes.

Be certain that you cut and prepare the cable and housing properly: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/cables.html#cutting

Thx for the tip. I'll do it at a DIY bike co-op.

Between the drum brakes, the chain case, and the battery-powered rear light, I'll get to learn a bit about Dutch bikes.

What have I learned ?

The old Nexus 7 (it says SG-7R45 on the hub) didn't have a cassette joint: To install a new gear wire, just shift to the loosest gear (7? 1? Forgot), and tighten the clamp; Shift to gear 4 and make sure the two marks line up; If not, wash, rinse, repeat until they do.

The gear cable housing sure needed an overhaul

I had to open the gear shifter to direct the wire where it was supposed to go:

Either the gear shifter is too old, or there are two different diameters for cable + cable ends, so had to do without:

The rear light ("z 1a 02978") is powered by two AA batteries:

Out of curiosity: How long should those batteries (regular; not rechargeable) last if the light is powered 1 hour each day?

Thank you.

100 hours is a usual claim for modern rear lights with two AA's. It's not a new bike but I don't believe there has been a breakthroug in LED technology recently and I trust Gazelle to have made sure their overpriced rear lights didn't annoy the customers with a shorter battery life than expected.
