I'm rebuilding a mountain bike and after buying a few parts I'm past the point of no return or this could become an expensive mistake!!

I'm fitting rockshox Reba air forks to my bike in place of suntour XCTs. The forks (second hand) arrived today and I discovered they have a maxle through shaft. The suntours are quick release drop outs.

1. Is there a way to convert the existing wheel to fit this shaft? If so what do I need - I'm assuming it won't be. The current hub is original on a cannondale and marked with C4
2. Can I replace the hub with a compatible one and reuse the rim and spokes of my existing wheel
3. Should I simply buy an new wheel?

Some hubs are convertible from quick release to thru axle, but I have no idea if yours is. Maybe call up C4 and ask them .https://c4cycleworks.com/contact-us

The ft hub's axle is a structural member what with the fork legs being able to move independent of each other. So for best fork and steering (not to mention rotor/pad rub) performance a hub designed to have a through axle will also tend to have a stiffer axle. Andy

The whole idea of a thru axle is that the hub itself has no axle. Here is an example of a convertible front hub.

Dan- Yes you are correct sort of, but I think I made the point of a stiffer axle (the through axle becomes the structural member) is a better thing in general. What I should have followed with is that if the hub has cartridge bearings and also a central sleeve to prevent the bearings' inner races from being crushed then that hub has an axle, although not what most would call by that term. The inner races and the sleeve form the axle and the through axle acts as a QR skewer with far more. strength/stiffness.Design and semantics are at play here. Andy

Your Cannondale stock wheelset is not capable of converting from 9mm QR to 15mm thru-axle. The only way to swap hubs while using the same spokes is to find a thru-axle hub that matches the dimensions of your stock hub (flange height and spacing, OLD would be identical). Your best guaranteed option is to buy a pre-built wheel to replace your stock front wheel.

Thanks for all the advice - I've been looking around at replacement hubs with very little success and on top of that worried then about the results of rebuilding a wheel - on the plus side new skill to learn which would be great!

So, now looking for a replacement wheel.
