ANSI Z89.1-2003 Appendix A4 states that caution should be exercised when painting hard hat shells since some paints and thinners may attack and damage the shell and reduce protection levels. The hard hat manufacturer should be consulted before painting. This specifically refers to industrial hard hats but the intent is applicable to bike helmets.
In addition paint or stickers may interfere with the ability to properly inspect a helmet for cracks or other defects which may reduce its ability to protect the wearer.

I removed the thin protective plastic shell from one of my helmets and then spray painted that thin plastic shell off the helmet. I let it cure really well before putting it back onto the helmet.

Cheers

I used to paint Motorcycle helmets. I always used acrylic artist paint from an airbrush to avoid the petrochemicals that are in rattlecans paints of enamels that could weaken the plastic or composite materials.

If your team has enough helmets in the order things can happen from the manufacturer end Andy

POC paints at least some of its helmets. Says so on the info included in the box. They specify they use a more environmentally friendly paint that may fade in sunlight. Presumably that's referring to the hi-viz orange segment on back of my otherwise white helmet.

Find out what they use and it's probably safe for polycarbonate helmet shells.

yeah,
i used a rattle-can of Rustoleum primer, in gray ...worked really well, never added another coat of color or anything , held up surprisingly well.
