You could, but I think @Raiyn's objection to isopropyl applies to it as well. (Usually only 40% alcohol.)

If you want to use food-grade stuff, it would be hard to do better than this:

I had to look up methyl hydrate. I had no idea it was a term for methanol.

Denatured alcohol is ethanol that has been deliberately contaminated (often with some methanol) to make it undrinkable (which is not a very good idea if you think about it). This is one of the causes of a high rate of blindness among alcoholics.

That is the one thing I remember from OChem: the prof always said hydrogen hydroxide, and wrote it HOH, to reinforce the idea that it's H+ and OH-.

Yes, but by this standard, water is a poison. Drinking a lot of water dilutes the salt (sodium and chloride ions) in your blood and extracellular fluid. This salt is key to your muscles and nerves working. Low sodium (hyponatremia) causes intoxication-like symptoms and can even cause death.

Not advocating anyone drink if they don't want to, but the effect of a drink or two a day are known to be pretty benign in most people.

With respect to acute toxicity, though, drinking any methanol is bad karma, and if you took a half-hour to wash your discs in pure methanol, you might have some issues. So wear gloves if you uses methanol.

To underscore my point about ethanol's lower toxicity, if you do ingest methanol, one element of the standard of care for therapy is to administer 10% ethanol (with 5% dextrose) in water intravenously. The loading dose is about 42 grams ethanol for a 70 kg (154lb) person. This is the same as 3 shots of hard liquor, and it's given iv over an hour, so this will make you very loopy. Then they continue to admin ethanol solution to keep your blood concentration high enough to defuse the effects of formaldehyde and formate. But the approach helps preserve eyesight and perhaps even your life.

After the whole thing was over, I'm betting you have the worst hangover of your life.

Fun fact: The highest concentration of ethanol you can get by distillation is about 95%, because ethanol and water form an azeotrope. Special techniques are necessary to get higher ("anhydrous") concentrations.

This has happen. Usually it is a contest to see which contestant can drink the most water to win a prize.

Yup. That's why Everclear is sold as 190 proof. Proof in the US is percent alcohol by volume(ABV), times two. BTW, in Britain, it was 1.821 times ABV, and there other scales. Now most places specify ABV.

A runner died at the 2002 Marine Corps Marathon. She drank water at every mile, no sports drink.
