Hub? Freewheel?

I'm back. This was me a little while back: Shimano Hub Removal Tool -Early? The wheel came out really nice! Thank you all who set me straight.

When I put it on the bike, (on a stand) I noticed that the crankset continues turning when I stop turning the pedals. When I stop the crank, the wheel slows down immediately. There is roughness and drag in the pictured part. (Freewheel, cassette, or?)

What do I need to get to the bearings? It's from the same early 80's Motobecane Grand Record as in the linked thread.

Yes, I have an identical rim.
Bill, I have my answer.
Thank you everyone.

Not real descriptive of WHAT the answer was.

The answer was in posts 6,7 and 8. I didn't need to remove the freewheel because I didn't need to remove the spokes as I was first thinking.

It'll be easier if you remove the cassette from the freehub. See uniglide cassette removal.

Thank you. I'm going to put the assembly back on the wheel to make it easier to work with.

If you want to disassemble this to clean/lube the bearings you need a Shimano TL-FH40 hub race removal tool, real hard to find. I made one, and this RJ The Bike Guy on youtube shows how he made his.

Uniglide cassettes were using the threaded top cog to hold the others on... like a freewheel .. so you need 2 chain whips to take them off..

Yeah, it feels like some bearings may be "crunchy". Maybe they were just too tight? Thanks, I'd like to get it apart.

Right threaded, otherwise the small sprocket would come loose while you pedal.

Notes for anyone searching in the future:

The threads are left-handed.

I made a tool. It ain't pretty, but it worked. RJ The Bike Guy used a 13/16 socket, I found all of mine to fit loosely, so I used a 7/8 and ground the OD to fit snug.

I didn't have to re-install it on the wheel to hold it in place, I just sat it on there with no bearings. It has to be on there, or it will just spin. (The way it turns to come off is the way it ratchets.)

Thanks everyone!

I wasn't clear. They are left-handed. I'm disassembling the Uniglide itself, I wasn't referring to the cassette or cluster or whatever it's called.

There are several thin shims inside it. One of them was destroyed. It got caught on the bearings somehow. There's not much space between the bearings and shims.
I'm going to look for a hyper glide and convert it, or get another uni glide.
