Keep a round post of the proper diameter available for clamping purposes. Or use something like the Park "internal seat clamp" tool to fit a range of diameters:

It wasn't till the frame arrived that I knew what post to get, do you keep every size post in your parts bin?
With any of these just learn how to be careful, in 16 years of working in a shop and 25 years of working on my own and friends bikes I've only ever damaged one frame in a stand, it was early on and it was my own. Good lesson, just learn to be careful with what you're doing.

Maybe wrap the clamp wit a rag or some of that pool noodle type foam bikes come packed in from Asia
and carefully set the bike frame on top of the repair stand foam pad it too..
no it wont be steady but you wont have to sit on the floor or turn the bike upside down...
