Successfully adding links to a chain - tips?

I reuse both the Sram separately sold links, and the Ultegra links. But I don't disassemble the chain more than a few times in it's lifetime.
They click back into place just fine.
Years ago, I had 10-speed Connex links. These don't click into place. Instead, they have a curved slot and chain tension is all that's needed for the quick link to be secure on the chain. So that's another reason I don't worry about reinstalling click links. Connex links got suddenly very expensive, so I quit using them.
I used various cheap methods for removing the links, but they didn't work easily on my 11-speed Ultegra. So I got the Park Tool Master Link Pliers MLP-1.2, So nice, easy and effective.

Chain cleaning
I used to take the 10 speed chain off, shake it in mineral spirits, then shake in a bottle of detergent and water, rinse with rubbing alcohol, and relube. Nice and clean.
But now, I just wipe off the chain and relube. I still get the same approx 3500 miles either way!

The manufacturers doubtless know more about their master link (hereafter "quick link") design and its long-term reliability than you or I. If they call their quick link design "single-use", then it probably is - though whether that means "use on one chain only" or literally means "install once, then discard if ever opened" isn't immediately obvious.
The meaning of "reusable" is similarly not immediately obvious; it could mean "can be opened/closed multiple times on the same chain", or "can be used on multiple chains". The former makes more sense, since like chains quick links also wear.
I'd recommend using a quick link that's identified as "reusable", as well as using a new quick link with a new chain. Maintenance might require chain removal, and if you use a reusable link you're covered regardless. They're available for 6/7/8/9/10/11-speed standard chains. (Most if not all 12+ speed, SRAM flat-top, and narrow/wide chain quick links currently seem to be single-use.)
That said, many people seem to get away with re-using "single-use" quick links. Just remember: caveat emptor. You have no one to blame but yourself if you go against manufacturer's recommendations and things go wrong.

Connex are 100% reusable.
KMC links with an R at the end of the model were said to be re-usuable a handful of times, but I no longer see that limit in the instructions: Re-use as much as you want.

SRAM and Shimano say you shouldn't reuse them after they are opened. The issue is that the tab that locks them together wears out. In reality, I know of literally hundreds of Shimano and SRAM quick links that have been opened and closed several times without accidental openings, so it seems like a non-issue. But KMC makes it really easy and cheap to buy reusable links, so it is easy to play it safe.
A fellow mechanic used to save the leftover sections of 11 speed Ultegra chain from customer installs and their old quick links. Then he'd build himself new chains for his MTB out of these scraps - 8 sections of short chain and 8 used Shimano quick links. No problems.

dammit, you saw right through me - I’m really a stealth shill for Big Link 🙄
as for “knowledge”, I’ll keep the words small for you:

- You can buy single-use links or reusable links.
- If you want a single use link, confirm from the packaging and/or the specs that it is a single-use link and then buy it.

I thought this was an interesting comparison. If you look at the pin slot in the Shimano link vs the above KMC, you can see that the Shimano uses a raised area on the thinnest part of the link plate to snap the narrowest part of the pin. KMC instead pinches the head of the link with metal that is the full thickness of the side plate. Which may be why they consider their R links reusable and Shimano does not. Definitely more meat on the KMC.

They are designed both ways. Don't think you can tell which you have by just looking.
