Drop to Flat Bar Conversion - Getting Started

I want to convert from drop bar to flat bar on my Salsa Fargo. It’s Sram Apex 1x. TRP Spyre C brakes. Shimano BL4700 levers. I have the correct parts as the bike has been in both configurations. LBS did it previously.

I want to try this on my own. I have questions, thanks in advance for your help.

With the levers:
- I want to know how to change the mode position and if it should be on ‘R’. I can’t tell if it’s on R but I haven’t touched since LBS did this previously (I just removed the brake levers a while ago).
- I don’t know how to install the mtb brake cable into the cable hook. I can fit it in there but how to keep it in there, securely

I’ll post later about the Apex flat bar shifter (one thing at a time

Did you notice in the pictograms they tell you what mode you should be in depending on what type of brakes you are using on the bike?

Or is that not your question?

Partly. It says be in R for road disc brakes. I don’t believe it’s in R though. Good lbs set these up originally so I would be surprised if they got it wrong. How do I know when it’s in R. Not sure how I change it. Instructions don’t really explain how.

It doesn't appear to be in the R position. However I don't use shift levers like that. So without me being able to see and manipulate them myself, I won't claim that for a fact.

Whether it's a good LBS or not doesn't mean anything. We don't know the context of what you mean by they set them up. You mean they installed them on the bike for you and then you took them off to make pictures? Or did they install them on another bike with a different brake type? Or did they just order a pair of shift levers for you and then made certain they were shift levers.

Perhaps the LBS knows something about the stuff going on your bike that we don't. You should ask them about that if you believe that setting this was something they were supposed to do.

In the road setting the cable hook is in the end of the slot closer to the lever pivot, in the V-brake setting it's in the farther end of the slot. The plastic inserts hold the hook in place.

They changed it from drops to flat bar a year ago. I didn’t like the bar and decided to go back to drops. A shop converted it back to drop config. I had the spare parts in a bag. Now I want to try another bar and see how it goes…just pulled the levers and shifter out of the bag and I’m trying to figure it out.

I see the difference now. I’ll try and move it.

This makes sense to me but I’m not 100% sure correct. The little plastic insert had an R or L so I ensured they remained with the appropriate lever.

the TRP Spyre C brake calipers are indeed ROAD pull ratio calipers and the Convertible Tiagra levers, in the pic directly above this post, are now appropriately set for use with them...
