IRD QB-95 bottom bracket issues

QB-95 IRD BOTTOM BRACKET

I’m trying to troubleshoot a bottom bracket from IRD it has about 10,000 km on it and it’s showing a lot of play without but with the cup on the non-drive side it’s showing about a millimeter of play. I tightened it repeatedly in different shops in Colombia and Ecuador. I’m on Panamerica Alaska South to Argentina.

I'll throw a few things out there. The DS needs to be threaded into the BB shell first until it butts up against the shell, then thread the NDS until it stops. If you already have done that find a thin blade of some sort and carefully pry off the bearing seal to check the condition of the bearing balls and if there is enough/any grease still there. If not, pack with grease and try it out. At 10k kilos it should be just breaking in at this point. Also the concentric (eccentric?) BB shell may be a little too wide as you said you replaced the original BB it may have a different width. Road is 68mm, mountain is 73mm wide and may have worked OK for some time but eventually became loose.

it's a bad design... the cup is aluminum, right?
shimano BBs work for a long time.....

get a shimano BB this time... preferably with STEEL cups
better still, get an Old school BB that you can re-lube and ADJUST, instead of Replace...
there are quite a few Tange BBs available... look into them. I have good results with them.

The way you are examining the BB off the bike is misleading. That center section is just a spacer - it doesn't hold the bearings in place and will move when it isn't in the bike. Same thing with the cup - it is designed to wedge the bearing, not necessarily hold it perfectly concentric unmounted. The only way to evaluate this BB is to mount it in a solid BB shell at full torque with grease inside and outside the cups.

Which brings us to the next issue - is your eccentric shell insert stiff enough to support the BB at full torque? When you turn the eccentric to (I assume) tighten the chain, are both sides actually moving perfectly together? Or is there some twisting that allows the BB to twist out of perpendicular with the bike? Would a different set up method help, like presetting the eccentric offset? With the eccentric completely locked, does the BB seem perfectly concentric on the NDS when you have the drive side tight?

I'm afraid your problem is too many moving parts and misalignments. If you have another frame with a normal BB, stick this in it and see if the problem remains.
