Normandy Competition

I need cones or an axle set for a Normandy Competition front hub. I know threads are different and this model requires 2x12, 3/16 bearings. the 2x12 is a first for me. Anyone know what actually fits this hub? In other words do I have to use the trial and error method?

What was on the hub clearly did not work and the cones were either imperial or 12mm. Oy!

your best source will be Ebay... there are several HUBS up for sale right now.
get the hub you want, and use it for parts.
one offering is for a front and rear, for less than you might, eventually, pay for a pair of cones... if you ever found them...

IF you consider also replacing the axle as well as the cones, you possibilities may open up

My Sutherland's Manual states the 12x3/16" balls per side is correct and mentions a "shallow cut cone". My memory matches this and I can say that only the correct cone and balls will work as intended. The cones have a ball track which is only about 2/3 of the cone's "thickness", the axle to outer surface height. (Generally most cones have the ball track cover nearly the entire "thickness").

The manual also states either 9mmx26tpi or 9mmx1mpt as the axle threading likely for a Q/R axle. These two specs are really close to the same pitch but a cone likely will have enough length of thread so the difference likely will be a problem. I suggest a complete Normandy Comp axle set as a first choice for replacement. This is where having an old time service focused shop near by can be a big plus. These days that's often the non profit operation helping those who can't afford other transportation. Andy

I used to maintain the Normandy hubs on my first Raleigh, over 50 years ago. I found that the standard Campagnolo (Record and Tipo) axle sets (axle, cones, and locknuts) worked well. Actually, they worked better. Of course, those are long gone.Nowadays I would measure what came out of the hub and match and eyeball it to the components in the Wheels Manufacturing catalog, axle parts. https://wheelsmfg.com/search?options...ide&q=hub+axle

Happy hunting.

Thank you for that information. I was hoping a lower level (Normandy) axle set would work. I'll probably change out the wheel so it can get back on the road. Way cheaper and less frustrating. Interestingly enough I removed the minute cones that were slapped inside with only 10 bearings, each side. The wear mark was at the top of the concave surface. I don't think that's right. And, they measure in less than 13mm.

I'll save the hub in case something comes my way.

Best to all.

My experience same as Bobcat, the Normandy Competition hubs on my PX10 were not impressive, especially
when one axle bent and another snapped. Was happy to find Campy axles and cones worked fine and were
metallurgically much higher quality. In that era of the '60s rear axles were 10x1M threaded and Campy had
axles for 120 and 126mm dropout spacings. Wheels Mfg has them but $45 (???) in both 10x1M and the
weird Campy 10Mx26tpi. Cones not included in that price. I switched to Phil hubs when hooked bead
tires and rims came out for 700C in the '70s.

it's sounding more and more like someone already screwed up the hub by putting the wrong parts in it.

GET A USED HUB EXACTLY LIKE YOURS FROM EBAY and salvage the parts YOUR Hub SHOULD Have in it..

You jogged my memory. I also used those Campagnolo axle sets as replacements in a cheap set of Zeus hubs.

Thanks for all the feedback. I found a regular Normandy hub and changed out the axle set. Seems to work fine. Number one is that I can actually adjust it.

I also put the proper number of bearings in it 2x12 and I checked a couple of sources where 3/16 bearings were called for.

So, that part is done! Onto the BB for the Grand Record.
