Wheel set compatability?
Can I put a new set of 700c wheels on my old Nishiki Road bike that currently uses 27"X1" wheels?

Unfortunately, you can't. A 27" Wheel is equivelent to 630mm and a 700c Wheel is equivelent to 622mm. I imagine there is something you can do, just ask your lbs about your situation.

I expect the old Nishiki already has "long reach" (47 to 57 mm) brakes. Most older bikes with 27" wheels had them.
As noted by Halfspeed, if your brake pads have enough adjustment in their slots to align with the smaller diameter 700c rims, you're good to go. You need to be able to lower them 4mm or about 3/16". Try it and see if they work.
One other possible problem. The Nishiki may have 120 mm (5-speed) rear dropout spacing and the newer wheel wheel may have a hub width of 126 mm (6/7-speed) or even 130 mm (8/9-speed). Again, try and see if it fits.

Thanks guys for the responses. I am now understanding the differences between the rim and tire sizes etc. My calipers are short reach Suntour Supurbe Pros that are already at the bottom of their adjustment slots. No way they would work on a smaller dia. rim. They barely make it with the 27" rims. If there is no specific advantage to the new rims, I will probably stick with the 27s unless I have problems with the the existing brakes and rim combination. The original bike came came with Dia-Compe Grand Compe Calipers, not the Superbe Pro. Anyway, I like the Suntour Calipers better, but can always go back to the DiaCompes if I have to.
