Phantom Shifting

Not much of a bike mechanic, but think this should probably be something simple. My bike seems to be shifting on its own lately on the rear rings. The bike is new and only has 250 miles on it. Seems like when I am on the small ring is when this happens most. Particularly when I am hitting it hard or going up hill. Is this a problem with the rear derailleur? All help greatly appreciated.

Bikes: Numerous (wife says to many)

You're do for a new bike tune up after 250mi. Take it to the dealer for adjustment of the cables, they stretch.

Cable stretch is the culprit. Have them show you how to do the adjustment while you are at the shop. It will save you time to be able to do it yourself eventually

Okay, I don't know if this is BS or not, but I read somewhere that this could be caused by cable drag under the bottom bracket. Something to do with the flex of the frame when "hitting it hard or going up hill". Theory is that it could tug on the derailleur cable, or some such thing.

"They" said to put a little grease in the guides under the bottom bracket.

It seemed to solve that problem for me one time. But then again, I was a total noob back then. Could not adjust a derailleur to save my life. But I have continued the practice anyhow.
