My precious!
Well of course it does have the shimano 105 steerer, the somewhat aero rims, slack in the brakes, chain... (plan on liqiudating the slack) yet it is Browns child. Put it together myself. Without the detailed information and advice I would have surely blunderd a whole lot more... don't think I would have started.
Thanks!
Thanks!

In light of recent events, I thought I'd bump this thread and give folks a chance to add to it.

Well... I have built about 5 bikes over the last 3 years. And all of them Sheldon contributed to, directly or indirectly. I asked him directly for advice with a couple of fixies, and for all of them I consulted his pages multiple times while building them and choosing components.

His site helped me build almost all of my Dawes Project, and maintain all of my bikes
He will be greatly missed.

i jam my thumbs up and back into the tubes. this way i can point my fingers straight out in front to split the wind and attain an even more aero profile, and the usual fixed gear - zen - connectedness feeling through the drivetrain is multiplied ten fold because my thumbs become one with the tubing.

Learned to build wheels from his tutorial and built my fixed conversion using his advice. Plus countless tips, tricks, and bits of knowledge gleaned off his website.

Sheldon helped me with my gear calculator. He offered quick and direct emails and even linked the finished product from his web site.
And of course, his website is my defacto reference for all things bike related...

His site taught me a lot about how a bike goes together.
On a lark I sent him an email when I needed a part for the internal hub on my winter bike and couldn't find it anywhere. He responded within minutes.

Sheldon's influence is in every one of my bikes... Even the ones I haven't touched yet, since reading his site and posts has helped support my view that bikes don't need to have a high classed pedigree to be worth the time to service and maintain.

My track bike sports wheels built by me and Sheldon. He told me what to do in great detail, and I did the actual handiwork.
But every bike I own has something, somewhere that was fixed, changed, fabricated, replaced, or adjusted based on his advice. Heck, there's probably a couple of things that weren't done based on his advice too.

Sheldon worked for Harris Cyclery in Boston. I would guess they know how to get in touch with his family. As this thread fills up it might be a good idea to tell Harris and they could give the family access to it ?

Sheldon's articles on fixed gear riding and conversions inspired and helped with this build of a Schwinn World Sport (as did parts from Harris):
And just a few days ago he answered a question here concerning my Trek 820 build. I was amazed he'd respond to such a simple question about a nothing-special bike:

I was able to select the parts I need for both builds in my sig, because of Sheldon's site. I never knew about shifter bosses, I didn't understand tire sizing and I got the right width handlebars because of him...thanks Sheldon!

I can't credit Sheldon for any one project
- but -
when I got back into cycling and wrenching, it was after a 28 year complete absence from both the sport and technology. Having found his website within the first couple days of finding that first old bike, I spent the next three weeks reading every section and word on it.
28 year absence? No problem. I was caught up in three weeks, and three years later it's like I was never gone.

I printed out many, many pages from his website, including the English/French cycling glossary, put it in a three-ring binder and took it to France with me when I did my cycling tour. His memoirs about living there were infinitely helpful to me in understanding and loving the culture. I wish I had told him that.
He will be missed.

I consider Sheldon Brown a sage...our Dali Lama of cycling. His teachings, patience, and words inspire, temper and uplifts our daily cycling life. The world has lost a very good man.
My Sheldon-inspired project is still pending completion, therefore no pics yet. A restoration of an unloved 89 Specialized road racer. After one summer weekend in 2006, when I biked out to Harris Cyclery for a visit and some ball bearings for the project, I got to meet Sonny, and received kind words and admiring looks for my first bike creation from 1980. The crew is a friendly bunch, and was a pleasure to do business with. When I ran into a snag, I thought of my Harris experience and sought out Sheldon Brown's advice. His words are like Haiku...no excess required. And reminded me to mind my hubris.
If we are able to achieve a fraction of his legacy of selfless assistance, we can be counted as fortunate.

Bicycling changed my life 2 years ago. A drunk left a really nice old road bike on my lawn, that I fixed up with some help from Sheldon's website. Since then I have built several bikes, fixed many more, lost 80lbs, dealt with my alcoholism, gone back to college, and many more things I never would have done without being introduced to cycling.
While I never communicated directly with Sheldon, he is one of many that I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to for the assistance, wisdom, and encouragement that his site offered. I had hoped to one day meet and thank him.
Thank you beyond words Sheldon, you and those who share your love of cycling saved my life.

Wheels. Built my first one with his help. He answered a few questions personally and I felt like the sage came down from the mountain to help me. I'll never build a wheel again without thinking about him.

Helping me figure out how to put together my first single speed.
But the one I'll remember most is when Harris Cyclery screwed up one of my orders; it was Sheldon "I ain't so big I can't talk to little people" Brown who wrote me back and made things right. Thanks, Sheldon, for all you've done.

Just last year Sheldon picked up on a posting and out of the blue sent me a quick, funny, and gracious note on getting a new wheel laced right. He is not gone and will be with us for many years.

My first wheelbuild, thanks to Sheldon's website. I remember having my crappy old laptop open on his wheelbuild webpage, following the instructions step by step.
That wheel still lives on today, being ridden in the summers (on the picture it has a studded tyre on, though). I dedicate it to the memory of the great master of everything bicycling, a very good man who will be missed by many.
