Anymore if you want to buy 'Made in the USA' you have to buy from a smaller builder like Waterford, Serotta....ect. Of course that also is closer to being custom than off the shelf.

"Schwinn - Schwinn was for many years the largest American brand. All bicycles were made domestically until the late 80's." This is not entirely accurate. LeTour bikes were first made in Japan in the 70's.

It's not even close to accurate.

In the '70's, Schwinn le tours, Travelers, Voyageurs, and Volares (and maybe more that I'm forgetting) were made in Japan. I like older Schwinns, and I like the fact that I've got '83 and '84 Schwinn le tours that were made in America. But Schwinn was a company that embraced the idea of "outsourcing" production of some of their bikes overseas very early on, in the early-mid '70's. And it continued from that point forward. All through the '80's, there were many more Schwinn models built overseas (Japan, Taiwan, and China).

Schwinn was bleeding red ink, and went bankrupt. I'm not sure if there's been an American made Schwinn, aside from the higher end Waterford-built and Serotta-built models, since the Greenville plant shut down in '91.
My old Prelude was made out of Columbu Tenex in Greenville. It was a really nice frameset. Can't say the same about the SunTour parts on it though.

Yep,two of my le tours ('83, '84) were made in Greenville (the Greenville plant operated from '81 to '91). I've got an '82 le tour that was made in Japan by Panasonic, as was my '79 Schwinn Traveler. And I've got an '89 Schwinn High Sierra mtb that was made in Taiwan by Giant. Schwinn was all over the map.

All of my Jamis bikes(3) are Taiwan made(the frames) and very high quality in my humble opinion. I have seen that some of the lower end Jamis are now marked made in China which is dissapointing to say the least but even Trek is doing that under $1000!

Trek makes most of its over $800 bikes in the US (so I've read) and Cannondale makes I think the majority of their bikes in the US. Beyond that I don't know of major manufacturers that make their bikes here.

Most bikes are made in taiwan or china.
Schwinn in name only...Richard Schwinn is alive and well and making bikes up in Waterford, WI. They are American made and some of the finest steel bikes available. You can buy a Gunnar frame which is the low end (but still fantastic) or a Waterford (and lugs are available). There are still some builders in the US but usually high end. Try the Gunnar. Go to the website and you can see prople touring the world over on a Gunnar. When I get ready for touring I will be buying a custom Waterford Cross/Road bike. All my bikes today are Italian built: Bianchi Track 64, Cinelli 69, Torelli Cross 88 (built by Guercotti in ITA), Greg Lemond 90 (Scapin ITA), Scapin 02 MTB, Mondonico 05 (17.8 lbs with a steel fork)...oh I nearly forgot I have a 1999 Ionic Thermachrom Foco tubing road bike (Italian tubing built in Pocatello, ID)...all steel all wonderful to ride.

Give the Waterford website a look see!

Is Jamis really a Canadian company?

I thought it was locally owned, i.e. by a family in New Jersey.

That's what I heard as well, from a LBS which used to carry the line, but discontinued it because, in their experience, orders took far too long to be filled.

In other unrelated news, Van Dessel is headquarted 15 minutes from me. Not sure where their frames are actually manufactured, but their office is located in an industrial town, so maybe NJ?

Jamis used to deliver me bikes on the same day, if the local guy was heading my way. I'd order it by 1, get it by 5 or 6. If not, they were 1 day away by UPS - if I ordered by 4 PM I'd get the bike the next morning. I or one of the guys would go there when we needed a lot of bikes "right now" - in 2 hours I'd have 5 or 6 more bikes in stock, we could sell them to customers after they got out of work. Must be different now. My rep is now working in a shop part time and I'm in IT. arg.
