I had a rear spoke break a while ago. Not being good with that sort of thing I stopped riding right away and took the wheel to my LBS. When I got it back and went to install it on my Specialized Allez Triple it went on fine but now every gear gives me a pronounced rubbing sound like what you might get from a FD when going from big chain ring to biggest cog as the chain rubs the cage. The sound if defiantly coming from my RD (Tiagra 9 speed). The sound is only there when I peddle and the hub/wheel spin freely with no odd sounds. Before I took the wheel in my drive terrain was whisper quiet. It almost sounds like it wants to jump into a different cog but I can see no place where it is rubbing.

Any ideas would be great. I don't know a whole lot but I did check Sheldons site and saw nothing that was of use to my situation.

1) check to see if your dropout is bent. Your chain line should line up directly below the cassette gear you are in.
2) twist the barrell adjuster on the RD. This will solve the "clicking" noise when you are in the middle of your cassette.

And yes, the answer was in Sheldon's web-site, you kinda had to know what the problem was before you might know where to look.

Simple - take it back to the shop, describe the problem as you have here, and then politely ask that they return the bike to proper working condition.

I made a slight adjustment, about 3/4 turn, and the noise has gone away for the most part. I'm just not sure what would cause this. I'm guessing the LBS did a little more then just true the wheel. I'll do a little more fine tuning and hopefully I'll get it back to 100%. I have been reading more on Shendons site lately as I know nothing about the wonder that is the RD.

Also I wasn't trying to infer that Sheldons site didn't have the information I was seeking, just that I couldn't find it.

As far as taking the bike in I don't think that would work because I only brought in the wheel in the first place. What would keep them from thinking I was trying to get a free RD adjustment that for all they know needed adjusting before the spoke broke. I'm early on yet in trying to build a good relationship with my LBS as I'm just getting back into riding.

Sorry I missed "...took the wheel to my bike shop." But for future reference should a problem arise: I worked in the bike biz for over 20 years, and any good shop wants to know when you are unhappy or when they might have overlooked something. They will generally give you the benefit of the doubt, especially for something that would take them a couple minutes to fix or explain to you.
