letour quick release single speed issue
i turned my 74 le tour into a single speed ghetto style by just removing the derailleurs and shortening up the chain. however now im having an issue where the drive side of the quick release goes off center causing the wheel to move to the left whenever i pedal. i noticed that the removable derailleur hanger had a sort of knurled surface most likely to prevent slippage. i was thinking of trying to stick some skateboard griptape to the drive side dropout to keep it in place. although this seems like it could go horribly wrong so are there any suggestions?
using the original wheels btw.
might just give up and put everything back on

Adding some "traction" would only marginally help in some cases.
However, in this case, I am positive that is not the problem. The problem is that your axle is now a tad too long since you took off the derailleur hanger. Does the axle (the threaded hollow tube) protrude a bit beyond the outside of the dropout? If yes, then that is your problem.
What to do? Depends what you have to work with. But here are some ideas.
-How close is the axle from protruding on the other side? If you have enough room over there, can you shift the locknut/cone/hub/cone/locknut to the other side so that neither side protrudes?
-If it is just a smidge over, you can remove both QR springs and buy yourself another couple of mm's.
-You could add a spacer under the locknut on one or both sides so that the axle does not protrude. Steel frames are pretty forgiving about such things.
-The correct solution would be to get or make a shorter axle (cut off a bit). I would try the above two first though.
This is a common and easy problem, don't give up.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.
As others have said, it is likely your axle is a smidge too long. Cut 2 or 3 mm off with a hacksaw and smooth the end with a file and you will be good to go.
If it still slips when u r crankin then maybe you are not gettin enuff force from yur QR. Try a bit of oil in the pivot of the QR or, if it is a newer open-style qr, then put a dab of grease on the concave nest where the cam part of the lever goes.
GOod luck!

Yeah, show pics with the Qr skewer removed, and the drops squeezed (by hand, or clamp) tight against the locknuts.
Not to suggest we cannot be wrong, but I am willing to bet you will find that the hollow axle sticks out (or maybe seems even with) the outside of the dropout. If it does then all the QR pressure in the world will not hold it in place.
(edit: and in that second picture, if the QR is shown tightened down, then notice there is a gap of a mm or two between the drop and the QR nut. If I am reading that picture correctly, then it is as I suspected earlier.)

hey you guys were absolutely right about the axle length. im trying to find something to shim it with before i go cutting anything.
i tried a skate bearing but the axle didnt quite fit in to it
