I think the Cosmoline/factory grease argument MAY have merit, but ... my $0.02 on chain maintenance is simple:
keep it reasonably clean and reasonably well lubricated, using any kind of reasonable lubricant.
Anecdotally, my method has worked quite well for me, for years.

For the mfgrs who actually use Cosmoline, I find it a fair lubricant, and haven't bothered to ever remove it from a new chain.

YMMV.

One thing I have noticed, with SRAM's better chains, is that cleaning solvent and lube easily penetrate into the chain rollers & pins. Getting penetration is just not a problem. I doubt other chains are any different.bk

My 5 cents (inflation) is...keep the factory grease,it's good for few hundred miles, more or less.

On every bike i've ever bought, i threw the stock Shimano chain straight into the trash.
Problem solved!

Just because of the grease? You must be rich.

No, i also hate the replacement pins and the chains seem noisier and weaker than an equivalent SRAM model...
